Who runs Balance

Balance is developed and operated by Erika Dmytrenko, an individual developer based in Barcelona, Spain, who is the data controller for Balance. If you have any question about your data, contact dmitrenkoerika@gmail.com.

What we collect

When you create an account and use Balance, we collect:

  • Account info: your email address, or your name and email if you sign in with Google or Apple.
  • Profile details used to calculate your targets: date of birth, sex, height, weight and goal weight.
  • Things you log: meal photos and descriptions, weight, steps, water, workouts, fasting windows, and any goals or preferences you set (calorie/macro targets, diet type, activity level).
  • Subscription status: whether you have Balance Premium and when it renews. Payment itself is handled entirely by Apple or Google; we never see your card or payment details.
  • Barcodes you scan, so we can show you the product's nutrition rating.
  • Basic usage data needed to make the app work (e.g. when you last opened it, for caching purposes).

We only collect what's needed to run the features you actually use.

How your data is used

Your data is used to run Balance's core features: tracking your energy balance, generating AI meal analysis and recommendations, scoring scanned products, and showing you your own history and progress. We do not use your personal meal, weight, or health data for advertising, marketing, or to train AI models, and we do not sell your data to anyone.

Some of what you log (such as weight and food intake) is health-related data. We process it only because you choose to enter it to use Balance, and only for the features described here. You can delete it at any time.

Who we share data with

Balance is built on a small number of service providers who process data on our behalf:

  • Supabase — hosts our database, handles account sign-in, and stores uploaded meal photos.
  • Render — hosts the Balance application itself.
  • Anthropic (Claude API) — when you photograph or describe a meal, or scan a new product for the first time, that content is sent to Claude to generate the nutrition analysis, coaching suggestions, or product explanation. Anthropic processes this data to return a response to Balance and does not use it to advertise to you.
  • RevenueCat — manages Balance Premium subscriptions purchased in the app. It receives your account ID and your purchase and subscription status (from Apple or Google), not your meals or health data.

Barcode-scanned product lookups also query Open Food Facts, a public, open product database; only the barcode number is sent, not any of your personal data.

We do not share your personal data with any other third party.

Legal basis and international transfers

We process your account data to provide the service you signed up for (performance of a contract), and the health-related data you choose to log (such as food intake and weight) on the basis of your explicit consent, which you give by entering it and can withdraw at any time by deleting it or your account.

Some of our service providers (Render, Anthropic and RevenueCat) process data in the United States. These transfers rely on the providers' standard data protection terms, including the EU Standard Contractual Clauses where applicable.

If you're in the EU/EEA, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority (in Spain, the Agencia Española de Protección de Datos, aepd.es).

How long we keep your data

We keep your data for as long as your account is active, so your history stays available to you. If you delete your account (Profile → Danger zone → Delete account), your account and everything you've logged is permanently deleted right away — this cannot be undone.

Your rights

You can, at any time, from inside the app:

  • Export a copy of your data (Profile → Export data).
  • Permanently delete your account and all associated data (Profile → Delete account).

If you're in the EU/EEA or UK, you also have rights under GDPR to access, correct, or restrict how your data is processed — contact us at the email above for anything the in-app tools don't cover.

Camera access

Balance asks for camera access to let you photograph meals for AI analysis and to scan product barcodes. Photos and scans are only used for those features and are not accessed for any other purpose.

Children's privacy

Balance is intended for people aged 16 and over. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 16.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of Balance after a change means you accept the update.
